Dr. McGowan was responsible for helping me achieve my dream of studying abroad my junior year of college. The application process included obtaining a letter of recommendation from the president. I remember thinking, “There’s no way; he’s a very busy man with no time to write a letter such as this for one student.” However, my desire to experience my dream overcame my fear, and one afternoon I marched into his office and asked to set up a time to speak to him.
His secretary informed me he was available, and I was warmly invited in to share my story and my request. Dr. McGowan not only listened with genuine interest, he agreed to have my letter ready the next day. True to his word, I received the letter the next day, and I credit it with my acceptance into the Queen’s University of Belfast for the 1998-99 academic year. I will be forever grateful to Dr. McGowan for his kindness in taking the time to hear my story and write that letter. That one encounter changed my life. Thank you, Dr. McGowan.
