Mike and Michelle Spurlock, both former senior healthcare executives (Mike also held senior positions in IT and finance and is a CPA), founded Loui Loui’s Authentic Detroit Style Pizza, a full-service establishment featuring pizza, burgers, pasta, craft beer, live entertainment, catering and special event spaces, in Jeffersontown in 2013. Mike plays guitar in four bands; Michelle joins him in two of them, Lou’s Blues Revue and Bennie & The Frets, that play at Loui Loui’s most Saturday nights.

How did your Bellarmine education prepare you for what you are doing today?
Mike: My accounting, business and information technology degrees have all been extremely useful in the restaurant business, especially understanding how to use technology for competitive advantage, cost accounting, business law, project management and marketing. Michelle: My degrees in nursing and my MBA prepared me to support all business aspects of the restaurant and executive management, including regulatory compliance, customer service, cost management, employee relations and education. All of our educational experiences provided a basis to help move our respective careers forward.
What advice do you have for Bellarmine alumni or students interested in pursuing your profession?
Focus on something you’re passionate about and stay with it—don’t give up just because it’s hard. Many obstacles will get thrown at you, and it’s far too easy to just throw in the towel. And sometimes if the idea seems crazy to everyone else, that may be an indicator that you are onto something. We love the quote, “Those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those of us who are doing it.” Set difficult goals, take initiative, track your progress and don’t be afraid to have to start over. Make sure you can always look yourself in the mirror. Do what makes you happy!
What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
Our career accomplishments have been many, but neither of us is ever satisfied standing still. Creating the Loui Loui’s Authentic Detroit Style Pizza concept and celebrating our fifth year in business with all of the accolades we have received confirms that you really can transform your career as long as it’s something you are truly passionate about.
