How did your Bellarmine education prepare you for what you are doing today?
My Bellarmine education has never stopped. From the time I first set foot on campus, I knew there was something special about Bellarmine. Even now, whether it be attending a lecture on social awareness, immersing myself into the culture of Appalachia with fellow alums or attending a Knights basketball game, Bellarmine continues to open my eyes to new experiences. I first learned what a “trust relationship” was at Bellarmine through my work with the Activities Council and Student Government—the meetings, connections, compromises, successes and failures experienced there established a solid footing that guides my daily work. For 10 years I used those skills in the political arena, but ultimately, I realized what I enjoy the most is connecting with people, which led me to insurance. I had the skills to start brand new, and I wasn’t afraid to do so because Bellarmine taught me my most important character trait: persistence.
What advice do you have for Bellarmine alumni or students interested in pursuing your profession?
Not a whole lot of graduates leave college and immediately think, “I’d really like to be an insurance agent!” It’s not the most attractive profession in the world, but it’s been a great fit for me because I’m able to really connect with my clients and make sure they are covered when life’s mishaps occur. An independent agent is also an entrepreneur. I’m running a business just like any other small business owner, so marketing, finances, systems and creativity are needed every day. If you’re looking to truly be there for someone and it makes you feel good to know you’ve got their back all while running your own shop, then insurance is your profession.
What career accomplishments are you most proud of?
I’m proud that I was able to leave my government job of 10 years and open an award-winning local insurance agency from scratch! The merger of my agency with that of my mentor, Tim Hyland, and his son, Terry Hyland ’97, has further cemented my reputation as a top insurance provider in the region. I strongly believe that if you are to be truly successful, you can’t just have a career, you must have a passion and integrate that into your livelihood. So I’m super proud to help lead BU alums each year to Appalachia, to serve on the Hand in Hand Ministries Board of Directors, to be the director of my son’s All Pro Dad’s Chapter and to continue to make my community strong. Overall, my long-term goal remains the same: to do right by my name and make my children proud to be Holtzmanns.
