Students, faculty and staff at Bellarmine University are having a conversation about the core community values that help to make Bellarmine a special place like no other. We invite you and everyone with a Bellarmine connection to join us in that conversation.
Our web page, bellarmine.edu/values, one result of this ongoing discussion, distills our values into four areas, so that new students, faculty and staff have a starting point for getting to know what is important to us as a community:
Hospitality: Bellarmine embraces new people and new ideas with openness and generosity of spirit, because we value the intrinsic dignity of each person as an individual, and each individual as a whole person. This characterizes our approach to teaching, to learning and to life.
Illumination: We are dedicated to the pursuit of enlightenment and understanding, by helping people develop critical thinking skills and teaching them how to think, not what to think.
Inspiration: As a community of teachers and learners, Bellarmine believes in providing life-changing experiences that educate and enhance.
Merton Spirit: Bellarmine finds its Catholic identity in the inclusive spirit of Thomas Merton. We believe in the search for the true self, the interconnectedness of life and the solidarity of the human spirit, which transcends ethnic, religious and social divisions.
Can you think of ways in which your experience at Bellarmine shaped your values, personally or professionally, later in life? If so, would you be willing to share with us?
We are looking for true, specific stories. You can write 100 words or 1,000 words—whatever your story requires. Email your story to firstname.lastname@example.org with “values” in the subject line. Please include your name and contact information.
We might use these stories in Bellarmine Magazine, in a special collection to help others come to know Bellarmine, and in our own introspection as a campus community. We value your insights—thank you for sharing!
