Maria González is a citizen of the world. Born in Medellín, Colombia, she moved to Puerto Rico as a child and has lived in Virginia, Texas, Florida, Connecticut and Kentucky. That wandering lifestyle has fostered a passion for travel, including many voyages in Europe, North America and South America. When she’s not traveling, she’s probably gardening. “It’s nice stress relief, and I love seeing the changes the seasons bring to the garden. Believe it or not, I love mowing the lawn. I also have a constant battle with the squirrels and the rabbits in my yard.” If she’s not traveling or gardening, she’s probably working on everyone’s favorite email newsletter, Bellarmine Today. Full disclosure: As administrative assistant in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, she also copyedits this magazine.
Other than this wonderful magazine? I read fiction, mostly mystery novels. I’m indulging in Swedish authors, such as Camilla Läckberg, Mari Jungstedt and Henning Mankell’s Wallander series. I discovered a really good series by Jussi Adler-Olsen, a Danish author – the Department Q Series – a must-read. I also read a lot of Spanish novels (don’t worry; most of them have English translations), among them: Idelfonso Falcones, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and María Dueñas. Dueñas has a new book, Misión Olvido; I’m waiting for my sister to finish reading it and send it to me. Isabel Allende has a good book, recently released in English, called Maya’s Notebook. I recommend it.
Portugal. We are going there this summer and I can’t wait. I haven’t been there yet and I’m looking forward to exploring a new city. And I’m also thinking about where to go next. Any suggestions?
I listen to a lot of Latin music. Some favorites are Carlos Vives, Juanes and Fonseca from Colombia. Spanish groups like Estopa, Canto del Loco, and Huecco. Maná and Julieta Venegas from México. Cheyenne from Puerto Rico. For dance music, El Gran Combo can’t be beat. Finally, one of my favorites is Nat King Cole singing old ballads in Spanish. Hard to believe he didn’t know a word in Spanish, but sings those old songs beautifully.
Of course, Downton Abbey. Can’t wait for the new season. I’m planning on a Game of Thrones marathon this summer. For laughs, I enjoy The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother.
